The United Premier Soccer League today announced that its official National Champion’s trophy will be known as the Leonel Lopez UPSL Champions Trophy, a historic designation honoring league founder, Leonel Lopez.
Founded in 2011 by Lopez with a small group of amateur teams, the UPSL was built with the mission of providing a high-level competitive environment for players and teams outside the traditional professional structure. What began with a handful of teams in Santa Ana, California has grown exponentially over the past 15 years, expanding nationwide and establishing itself as a premier pathway for player development and club growth.
Leonel Lopez reflected on the significance of the honor and the league’s continued impact. “It is truly a great honor,” Lopez said. “This trophy tells an amazing story, from our humble beginnings in Southern California to competing on the national stage. As we celebrate 15 years of the UPSL, the growth and evolution of the league have been extraordinary.”
